FGI Partners with charity: water to Fund Water Well in Uganda

NEW YORK, October 28, 2013 – FGI has teamed up with charity: water once again to fund the construction of a water well in the East African country of Uganda. The project is scheduled to be completed in early 2015.

This is the second clean-water project that FGI has sponsored. In 2011 FGI first partnered with charity: water to sponsor the repair of an inactive hand-dug well located in a remote village in Cambodia. This year, FGI is funding a new borehole-style water well in Uganda. While borehole-style wells are more expensive to construct due to the heavy equipment, materials, and skilled technicians required, they can often provide up to twice the amount of clean water than a traditional hand-dug well.

FGI’s $20,000 donation will bring a much needed clean water supply to approximately 500 people.

The benefits to these communities of having access to clean, potable, drinking water are significant. More than 3.4 million people die each year as a result of sanitation and hygiene related diseases, with more than 99% of these deaths occurring in the developing world. Additionally, it is estimated that more than 780 million people worldwide lack access to an improved water source; approximately 1 in 9 people.

“FGI is very excited to continue to work with charity: water by assisting their efforts in Uganda. We are proud to work with such a solid organization that continues to make improvements to water resources and education, both of which have such a profound impact on peoples’ lives,” said David DiPiero, President and CEO of FGI.

Further benefits of the water well include reduced time spent collecting clean drinking water – affording women more time to earn extra income, and children the opportunity to focus on an education – as well as providing a reliable irrigation system that improves farming and increases the food supply to these communities and villages.

The project also aims to recruit and train community members to conduct sanitation and hygiene education, ensuring these communities have continued access to clean, safe water.
